Use a Design Thinking Approach to Game Design
What is each player trying to achieve? Does each player have the same goal? Do they work together, or do they work individually toward this goal? How does the goal align with the topic you are trying to convey?
What is the best category of game to fit your goal? Should they try to control areas of the board or resources? Gather cards to make combinations? Work together or in secret teams to achieve objectives?
What are the abilities and options available to players? Are they collecting card types? Deciding whether to roll dice to reach an objective? Attempting to trick other players into believing them?
What physical items do you need to design to make a game that can be played? Do you need to design cards? Relabel dice? Create a game board? How can you use technology and everyday items to make it?
Can you effectively teach the game to other people so they can play? Do other players understand the mechanics of your game and their goal? Is the game fair, fun, and full of great choices to make?
What did you learn about your game from the playtest? Do any mechanics need tweaking? Is the game too difficult? Too easy? Is there a way to improve gameplay or make it more enjoyable?
